AfA's Economic and Social Rights Programme (ECOSOC) is an advocacy initiative, which aims to support the development of capacity of women's organisations to effectively contribute to and provide greater understanding and transferable skills for advocacy, monitoring and promotion of women's economic and social rights within the Anglophone West Africa sub-region.
AfA in collaboration with the United Nations Funds for Women (UNIFEM) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) developed a comprehensive training manual on Economic and Social Rights. This handbook covers areas of human rights that have been neglected by government and civil groups alike. Our ECOSOC programme also addresses issues such as Harmful traditional Practices against Women and Violence Against Women.
Most recently, a new initiative evolved from our ECOSOC advocacy based on demand from our local partners on how to adopt the rights based approach to addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS. Thus AfA designed the 'Promoting the Rights to Health initiative'. The initiative aims to use a right-based framework in partnering with HIV/AIDS support groups to address the right to health of people living with HIV/AIDS and the implications for women.
