AfA's core activities are organised under a five point agenda namely:
There is currently little collaboration among organisations in Africa working within the areas of human rights, peace and development. AfA programmes attempt to redress this through appropriately targeted, practical initiatives in association with local, national and regional organisations.
The Women in governance initiative is aimed at encouraging women in Africa to participate actively in governance, public life and decision making processes at all levels in their communities. The activities under this project are designed to provide and contribute to the broader goal of empowering and advocating for full participation of urban and rural poor women and potential women leaders. The project was implemented as a pilot initiative in Imo and Ebonyi States South East Nigeria and is now being replicated in other parts of Nigeria and West Africa.
AfA seeks to encourage cross-cultural co-operation, working with local organisations to promote South to South and South to North networking initiatives, inform policy-makers and facilitate fast and appropriate responses to human rights violations at national and regional levels.
AfA enjoys observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACommHPR). We also work closely with the Commonwealth Secretariat, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) plus provide technical support to the West African Human Rights Forum (WAHRF) and West Africa Civil Society Forum (WACSOF).
We are also members of the British Overseas NGOs for Development (BOND) network and the Women in Development Europe (WIDE) Network, UK Platform and previously members of the UK Network on Conflict, Development and Peace (CODEP), and co-governors of its Gender and Conflict working group.
